Return to cooler temps in the East hurts seasonal business (April 6-12)

Colder-than-last-year (and normal) temperatures slide into the eastern half of the country this week, a flip from warmer conditions last week. From a comp perspective, Planalytics is projecting a negative 5% weather impact for the U.S. overall vs. last year for home centers and hardware stores.  Many Eastern markets will see stronger weather impact headwinds (see image below), while only parts of the Rockies and Southwest will see a weather boost compared to the same week last year.

Planalytics has developed WeatherSpendSM analytics in partnership with Facteus, a leading provider of debit & credit card transaction data. WeatherSpend metrics isolate the impacts of the weather alone on spending for retail sectors and specific businesses.

Planalytics’ Weather-Driven DemandSM analytics quantify how much demand for specific products will increase or decrease due to changes in the weather. Category examples for this week (compared to last year) highlight the challenges retailers will see with spring products.
