Put a Bow on Cyber Monday and the Holiday Weekend

Per our friends at the National Retail Federation, there was a record 203 million shoppers over the holiday weekend, topping original estimates. While in-store shopper growth rose by 3%, the number of consumers shopping online rose by 9%.  Check out Planalytics recap on the weekend.

According to our partners at Facteus, e-commerce sales rose significantly over the Black Friday through Cyber Monday period. While national growth was strong, there were some unique trends at a regional level. For example, the Midwest and Northeast regions had stronger growth in ecommerce sales on Saturday and Sunday while growth slowed on Cyber Monday relative to other regions in the US. Why? The WEATHER!

Chicago, Des Moines, and Indianapolis were a few markets experiencing snowfall over the weekend. In fact, it was the snowiest Black Friday weekend in over 25 years.  This likely shifted purchasing in this region from in stores to online.

In addition, markets in the Northeast and the South regions experienced colder than normal temperatures over the holiday weekend, increasing demand for cold weather categories.

Planalytics WeatherSpend, which quantifies the impact of weather, is seeing a 50 basis point increase in E-commerce spending compared to last year for the current retail week.

We have a lot of holiday to go, but mother nature is already leaving her mark on the holidays in terms of consumer shopping impacts.
