Planalytics North American WeatherCall Report: Temperatures, Rainfall Significantly Impact Consumer Buying Behavior in June

WAYNE, PA, July 8, 2009 - Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence®, released its monthly WeatherCallSM report for June 2009 citing regional weather patterns and their influence on the demand for summer goods and store traffic. June temperatures were a big story, as locations in the east were significantly cooler than last year. The Mid-Atlantic Region averaged 4.5 degrees cooler than June 2008, slowing demand for shorts, t-shirts and swimwear. Temperatures in the Southeast and Interior U.S. were sizzling and so was the demand for pool chemicals, bottled water and packaged ice.

Equally as important as temperatures was the rainfall experienced in the Northeast. New York City reported 22 days of rainfall in June, driving demand for rainwear and umbrellas while hindering store traffic. Other cities reporting significant rainfall in June include Hartford, Salt Lake City, Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia.

"After a warm May, June was a shock to consumers and businesses. Cooler and wetter conditions, particularly in the beginning of the month, stifled seasonal demand. June was clearly a case where business weather intelligence helped successful businesses put the right product in the right place at the right time while maintaining profitable margins." said Fred Fox, Planalytics President & CEO.

In Planalytics’ tracking of publicly traded companies, 61% of the businesses showed negative weather favorability compared to June 2008. The largest dips of year-on-year favorability were seen at BJ’s Wholesale Club (BJ), Target Corporation (TGT) and DSW (DSW). Companies that benefited from June’s weather conditions included Big 5 Sporting Goods (BGFV), California Pizza Kitchen (CPKI) and Shoe Carnival (SCVL).

Planalytics will be hosting a Business Weather Intelligence Symposium on Wednesday, August 26 at Arvest Ballpark in Springdale, AR. Speakers include Shell Lubricants, Nestle Waters, Alberto Culver, Jarden Consumer Solutions and General Electric. These companies will discuss how weather impacts sales of their products and share examples of how they work with their Walmart (WMT) counterparts to better align inventory with weather-driven shifts in consumer demand.
