Planalytics North American WeatherCall Report: Warm Weather Helps Boost Consumer Spending During The Month Of May

WAYNE, PA, June 2, 2009 - Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence®, released its monthly WeatherCallSM report for May 2009 highlighting how warmer than normal temperatures throughout North America were a catalyst, along with improving Consumer Confidence levels, for increased shopping activity and sales. Businesses looking to sell-through spring merchandise such as t-shirts, sandals, barbeques, lawn and garden items and ice cream all were helped by favorable weather conditions. Based on 96 major metropolitan areas across North America, May 2009 was 2.1 degrees Fahrenheit warmer than May 2008.

"Historically, weather's influence on consumer behavior in May is very strong. This May, a confluence of factors contributed to stronger economic numbers, with the weather having a considerably positive influence. The favorable temperatures to last year fostered the need for all manner of seasonal items, particularly those need-driven purchases which consumers had put off into late Spring." said Scott Bernhardt, Chief Operating Officer of Planalytics.

In Planalytics’ tracking of publicly traded companies, 97% of the businesses showed positive weather favorability compared to May 2008. The largest year-on-year gains were seen at The Dress Barn (DBRN), J. Crew (JCG), Wet Seal (WTSLA), and Chipotle Mexican Grille (CMG).

Planalytics reported positive year-on-year weather-driven demand indices for the following product categories: Dehumidifiers (+22%), Plants & Shrubs (+13%), Fitness Drinks (+10%), Shorts (+8%), Pool Chemicals (+6%) and Allergy Relief (+2%).
