November 4, 2008
Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence®, issued its October WeatherCallSM report noting the 5th coolest October in the last 15 years (compared to last year’s 2nd warmest in 50 years) helped drive seasonal demand. Softline-focused retailers were the big winners in October with a 16% increase of weather favorability, driving sales of items such as sweaters, fleece and gloves. Home Centers and Restaurants suffered as a result of consumers focusing their attention to fall apparel “needs”. Among the companies showing the largest positive year-on-year weather-driven demand indices were The Bon-Ton Stores (BONT), J. Crew (JCG) and Carter’s, Inc. (CRI). Among companies showing the largest negative indices were Lowe’s (LOW) and Ruby Tuesday (RT).
Generally, October was a dry month for North America, with the exception of the Plains. This resulted in a boost in foot traffic in the Mid-Atlantic areas.
“In these tough economic times, consumers are purchasing purely out of need. The cold weather this October was the catalyst for many consumers to recognize this need, particularly in the eastern half of North America.” says Scott Bernhardt, Planalytics Chief Operating Officer.
Planalytics reported positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for following product categories: Electric Blankets (+45%), Firelogs (+18%), Cider (+9%), Cough & Cold (+3%) and Soup (+1%).
