Planalytics United Kingdom WeatherCall Report: Burst of Warmth Elevates Summer Demand Towards the End of July

5 August 2008

Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence®, explained in its July WeatherCallSM report that a split in temperature patterns caused a jolt to consumer behavior. The month started off cool and wet and stayed that way until around the 23rd of July. Initially, summer purchases were slow, causing many retailers to respond by discounting their warm weather items. The last third of July resulted in a burst of warmth throughout the country. The rise in temperature was welcomed by the high street as many consumers were purchasing T-shirts and shorts that were slow to leave shelves at the start of the month.

Overall, July 2008 was 1.4 degrees warmer than last year, and just about a half degree warmer than normal. Sales of outdoor dining products such as barbeques, charcoal and bistro sets were on the positive side. Additionally, humid overnight conditions helped sales of fans and air conditioners. The consumer response to the hot temperatures across the UK was immediate.

“The weather was generally positive for the high street in July,” commented Tim Morris, Managing Director for Planalytics Europe. “Many purchases may have been made at a reduced margin, but the increase in temperatures aided in clearing excess stock on summer-related items,” added Morris.

Planalytics WeatherCall Report showed positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the following product categories on a national level: Garden Furniture (+20%), Sunglasses (+15%), Beer (+9%) and T-shirts(+5%).
