Planalytics U.S. WeatherCall Report: The Wettest February in 10 Years Played Havoc With Consumer Patterns |

March 5, 2008
Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence®, released its February WeatherCallSM report stating that volatile weather conditions across the U.S. resulted in erratic consumer shopping patterns. Temperatures averaged 2 to 4 degrees above normal for February, negatively affecting products such as soup. However, the bigger story was the frequency of powerful storms across the country. Early demand for spring items was halted by these storms, particularly on the West Coast, which experienced the most snow that region has seen in 15 years. These reoccurring storms proved to be most favorable for Broadlines and Home Centers, which showed a higher comp to last year.
“While February is typically a transitional month for business to clear winter product and begin pushing spring merchandise, the calendar still says winter, and this February was a prime example,” said Fred Fox, President & CEO of Planalytics. “Retailers in the Great Lakes who sell snow removal products such as ice melt and snow throwers are very clean as the end of the season approaches,” noted Fox.
Planalytics WeatherCall Report showed positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the following product categories on a national level: Lawn & Garden (+21%), Flea & Tick (+12%), Tees (+11%). Negative year-on-year indices were calculated for Power Industry (-2%), and Lip Protection (-12%) product categories.
