Planalytics U.S. WeatherCall Report: Volatile Weather Conditions Disrupt Consumer Buying Patterns in January |

February 6, 2008
Planalytics Inc., the global leader in Business Weather Intelligence, released its January WeatherCall® report highlighting how sharp and extreme temperature fluctuations and an increase in major winter storms during the month altered typical consumer buying trends. Traffic hindering storms along with dramatic temperature shifts from bitter cold to spring-like warmth affected restaurants and softline sectors in a negative light as compared to a year ago. These "roller coaster" conditions produced a more positive year-on-year impact for home centers and broadlines retailers.
“The warmer temperatures compared to last year were detrimental to apparel retailers and manufacturers looking to clear winter product,” said Evan Gold, Planalytics’ Sr. VP of Client Services. “Even more impactful, the increase in winter storminess across the Plains, Midwest, and Northeast made for a challenging environment due to significantly adverse travel problems and power outages. This translated to detrimental traffic conditions for many retailers and restaurants,” noted Gold.
Planalytics WeatherCall Report showed positive year-on-year weather driven demand indices for the following product categories on a national level: Rainwear (+21%) and Long Sleeve Shirts (+5%). Negative year-on-year indices were calculated for Electric Power (-2%) and Thermal Wear (-4%) product categories.
